Channel Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated community in Antioch Township, Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,664 at the time of the 2010 census.
Channel Lake is located in northwestern Lake County at 42°28′40′′N 88°8′55′′W on the northwest and southwest sides of Channel Lake, which is part of the Chain O’Lakes system of lakes in northern Illinois that leads to the Fox River. It is bounded to the east by the Lake Catherine community and to the north by the village of Salem Lakes, Wisconsin.
The Channel Lake CDP has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.2 km2), of which 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2) are land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), or 24.90 percent, are water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The CDP had 1,785 residents, 696 households, and 473 families according to the 2000 census. The population density per square mile was 916.1 (353.4/km2). There were 855 dwellings at a density of 438.8/sq mi (169.3/km2). The CDP’s racial makeup was 96.13 percent White, 0.22 percent African American, 0.90 percent Native American, 0.73 percent Asian, 1.18 percent other races, and 0.84 percent mixed race. 1.85 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 696 households, 32.5 percent of which had children under the age of 18, 52.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent had a female householder without a husband, and 31.9 percent were non-families. Individuals made up 24.4 percent of all households, with 7.0 percent having someone 65 or older living alone. The average household size was 2.56 people, with a family size of 3.06 people.
The population in the CDP was diverse, with 25.2 percent under the age of 18, 6.9 percent between the ages of 18 and 24, 31.8 percent between the ages of 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between the ages of 45 and 64, and 10.7 percent aged 65 and up. The average age was 38 years. There were 112.2 males for every 100 females. There were 112.2 males for every 100 females aged 18 and up.
In the CDP, the median income for a household was $51,384, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $39,107, while females had a median income of $30,050. The CDP had a per capita income of $27,772. Around 7.6 percent of families and 9.9 percent of the population were poor, including 19.6 percent of those under the age of 18 and 4.8 percent of those 65 and older.
